1st Round report from an excited Junior Committee member….

What a privilege to watch 5 games out of 6 ELHC Junior games over the weekend. (Sorry I just physically couldn’t be in Geelong as well as Essendon on Friday)

We had 5 teams at home showing their skills as individuals and members of fledgling teams. Some we won, some we didn’t but all in all everyone gave it there best shot. Some girls even doubled up and played 2 games.

What commitment our dedicated coaches have to our daughters …they all will put in approximately 100 hours over the hockey season to ensuring our girls gain new skills and knowledge of hockey whilst playing the game.

I look forward to spending time watching all our ELHC Juniors during the year and hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I will.

Please take time to come and watch a senior team at home sometime …some of our Junior coaches ( Erica, Bron, Floss, Claire, Kate ,Amy, Julia) show their skills each week and our junior players will benefit from watching their coach and the game at very high skill levels. Just ask your coaches when they are playing at home next!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Social Events and Fundraising – Di Saward / Laurel Kinross

Our first fundraiser will be a chocolate drive in early May.

Don’t forget we are always looking for people to help with our fundraising and social events so please contact us if you can lend a hand!

Canteen - Maree, Katrina & Marian

Many thanks to everyone who helped out in the Canteen for Round 1.

We are scheduled on Canteen Duty Friday Nights and Saturday Mornings for Rounds 1, 4, 7, 10, 13 & 16.

The Canteen provides significant funds to the Club and all junior teams are required to provide volunteers for the canteen on Friday nights and Saturday. This should equate to no more than 6 hours per player for the entire season.

Add your name to the Canteen Roster Wednesday night at training on the white board.– "first in first served".

good sportsmanship

One of the most important goals in any Junior Sport is to promote good sportsmanship.

You may ask, ‘what is good sportsmanship’?

It is the way we as players treat each with respect other before, during and after a game - regardless of a win or loss.

Some examples of good sportsmanship are -

* Shake hands with the opponent before and after the game, regardless of result.

* Cheer in a positive manner.

* Accept all decisions by the umpire with good grace.

* Applaud good plays by both team mates and opponents.

* Applaud at the end of the contest for the performance of all participants.

* But most importantly, Win with class - lose with dignity.

At the end of the day, it’s not about how you won or lost, but how you played the game!

‘GAME DAY’ Nutrition

All Players need to drink plenty of water (or water + sports drink) during the day, in the car on their way to the game, at half-time and after the match. Some information will come out in the coming Newsletters about Eating & Drinking before a game.

Encourage the girls to read this & to look at the AIS and BBC websites for information on Sport & Nutrition.

Development Activities - Lesley Williams

VICSTIX

Over the summer months, several of our U15’s have been participating in the Vicstix development programme. They hopefully have not only enjoyed the experience, but have learnt many useful skills to enhance their hockey knowledge.

This programme ended with a round robin tournament at the SNHC during the school holidays. We were all able to watch some very fast paced and skilful hockey from all the teams competing. Of the 6 games played, our division won 5. The girls from Essendon played excellent hockey and were wonderful ambassadors for the club.

Congratulations to Milli Allen, Sarah O’Shannassey, Ashley Pearson, Maddie Pelzer and Emily Williams.

Guidelines to players at trials for Regional or State Teams

1. Get a good nights sleep the night before.

2. BYO drink, warm clothes, ball, stick and Dark and Light shirts.

3. Arrive 30 minutes prior to selection time to warm up physically, mentally and stick work. Do this off your own bat… don’t expect selectors to instigate this.

4. What the selectors will be looking for:

  • Passing skills- hard, flat, accurate
  • Receiving the ball-both sides
  • Elimination skills-both sides
  • Tackling- footwork, strong, channelling, no stick obstruction,
  • Shooting- get free in circle, shots away under pressure, array of shots
  • Involvement in the game/awareness- work hard when opposition have the ball, recognise 2v1 and 3v2 situations
  • Temperament- involvement, talking, stay in control, stay positive
  • Goal Keepers only- talking, making saves, kicking to safety (both feet), agility, lying down to standing position quickly, one on one skills, positioning. (Separate GK technical tests will be conducted in addition to the matches)

Remember there will be a large number of hopeful hockey players all wanting to get selected, just like you. You need to be noticed!

Listed below are some other recommendations that you might like to consider, that may help you get noticed.

  • Wear something distinguishable eg: bright coloured socks or shorts, headband, ribbons,
  • Learn the names of the players around you and use them in matches
  • Talk loudly and confidently on field- calling people to mark players, letting your team know who is available
  • Make strong, confident leads
  • Demand the ball with your voice and with your stick
  • Ideally, hold the position you have been instructed to play. If however the ball has not come to you after a short while, move into a spot on the field so that you can be involved with the play. Its hard to be noticed if you’re not near the ball. Always be aware though, that if you are a defender and your opposition player scores a goal against you, this is not the way to be noticed.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills
  • Do the simple things well- trap, push, hit, drag
  • Don’t stress if you don’t do everything perfectly. No-one else will be either
  • Stay relaxed and enjoy the experience
