Thank You - to all members of Essendon Ladies Hockey Junior Section for their achievements and participation in another huge year of hockey for our youngest players. The year began back in October 2006 with a summer skills program run by Ken Parkin, long time president of the Victorian Junior Hockey Association and a life member of Hockey Victoria. Ken is still an extremely active member of Victoria’s hockey fraternity with many interests in the development of junior hockey in Victoria. We can all learn from his knowledge, passion and perspective on the long term future of junior hockey.
A number of our players participated over an approximately 6 month period in the VICSTIX program. This value-added to their hockey capabilties and we wish the next group of players who will be trialling for this program in October every success. Prior to the winter season commencing, several junior players represented the Western region in the U18 state championships, played at Footscray. Amy Coshan, Hannah Ekers, Chloe George, Katie Kinross, Gaby Cresp, Hannah Stapleton, Jenna Tellefson and Laura Aston played extremely well and were unlucky not to play off in the Grand Final.A large number of players from U13, U14 and U15 played with Wildcats teams in the state tournament in July and we congratulate Sarah O’Shannassy, Megan Shadbolt and Georgia Salanowski in successfully making the U14 state squad. A number of ELHC players made the final cut of the U18 state trials (Liz Kyran, Amy Coshan & Caitlin Jones), a significant achievement as players from U16, U17 and U18 compete for this team. We should also mention the outstanding achievement of several ELHC senior players who are actually still juniors and made Victorian teams - Georgia Nanscowen and Melissa Lester for the state U15s and Caitlin Jones for the VSSSA U16s.Two of our junior teams, U17GA and U15GN, made the finals this winter season, finishing second and fourth in their respective competitions. For 2007 we slightly changed the configuration of teams to accommodate the large numbers (40) in the U17 age group and smaller number (16) in the U13 age group. We have worked hard and successfully to manage the transition of the junior players to senior ranks. This is reflected in the addition of an extra senior side for the 2007 season and the probable addition of another senior side for 2008. We have a metro3 and metro 4 side already through to grand finals, with a significant representation of juniors in both sides. Further up the senior team lists we have no less than 7 juniors in the top 2 teams with more than 10 other players who are 18 or under in the pennant grades. The future for ELHC is tremendously promising. Our premier team for 2007, U17GA had a magnificent season, finishing second on the ladder and only losing to the winner of the grand final (Altona) in their semi. The coaches of this team - Erica Trahar and Bronwyn Jones - were outstanding in their commitment and enthusiasm for the development of their team. Both play in top senior teams and Ric is a VIS Viper and vice president of our club. Both are role models to be admired and emulated. The U17GPAs struggled with the dual handicaps of a small player list whenever girls in the other 2 U17 teams pulled out and the lack of a permanent coach for the first third of a season. Lesley Williams, a parent and player for ELHC seniors / Vets, did a wonderful job until we were fortunate enough to have Amy Goodwin step into the coaching role. Amy is dedicated and full of enthusiasm and this love of hockey shows in her taking on the VSSSA U16 Boys team manager role for Victoria this year. Amy made a huge contribution in making U17GPA more focused and close-knit. Our U17GN team also was without a coach initially and as a club we must thank another parent, Jack Roosenboom, for stepping up and taking on this challenging, bubbly mix of novice and more experienced players. This team demonstrates the dual benefits of keeping girls in sport and a team/club environment where they can make new friendships and maintain an active component to their busy social/school lives. They were great representatives for our club at all times—showing sportsmanship and a determination to be competitive to the best of their abilities. They were unlucky to be robbed of several wins they had chalked up from the first third of a season, when the fixture was completely re-drawn.The U15GA team probably met with the toughest, most even competition for the season. It was a young side with all but 2 of the players remaining in the same age group for 2008. The team was blessed with an abundance of talented, ambitious players but soon discovered that this was the case at every other club as well! The team had drawn on players from ELHC U13s, ELHC U15s, EHC, Melton and while it took a little while for the team to gel, I was pleased to umpire them in the 4th last round and be told by the other umpire that while the opposition had equally good players, our team were making each other look good by playing better as a team. You cannot ask anymore than that. The U15GN team went from strength to strength and surprised everyone (including their coach, Clare Dawson, a pennant C player herself) by finishing in the four! They had 4 completely novice players and it is to Clare’s great credit that every single player was determined to be available for the final (which we only knew we had made 2 days before it was to take place due to a postponed game). They held the top placed team to only 2 goals and can be extremely proud of their achievements in 2007.Our U13GA team is also extremely inexperienced compared to clubs with a mixed U9 and U11 stream to draw on. The lack of a girls U11 competition leaves a huge hole in Victoria’s junior development program. Our coaches, Julia and Amy, did an amazing job in developing each and every player in this team in terms of their understanding of hockey and their basic skill capabilities. The majority of this team will again be U13 in 2008, which is promising for team confidence and cohesion. The challenges for 2008 & beyond are significant. We must continue to develop the skills of our players and maximise their hockey opportunities by building a strong club culture and an effective administration base. We have the expertise and the talent. To translate this potential into a successful reality requires greater commitment from each and every family - ’many hands make light work’. We have a large community based club. Please help to make its future as wonderful as its history……...Rachel Aston, Junior Convener ELHC 2007 LOOKING TO 2008…..It is likely that we will enter 5 teams for the 2008 season - U17GA, U17GN, U15GA, U15GN and U13GA. This is of course dependent on registration numbers. EHM and the clubs are continuing to work hard to make a new ground #2 a reality for the start of the 2008 season. Several important steps forward have occurred in recent months. With EHC, we are trying to offer umpiring and/or coaching course information during October at the Clubrooms – stay tuned! The new EssendonHockey website is very close to a launch! The whole club AGM will be held in early December—if you want to know more about how the club is run, what has been achieved during 2007 across the junior & senior sections or are considering volunteering for a particular role, this is the meeting to go to! Registration for 2008 will be conducted in early to mid February. More information will be available via email/post early in the new year.Summer competitions and our summer skills and running programs begin in October /November. All players are welcome to participate in both these activities. See below for more details. Please consider volunteering NOW for a role on your junior committee, as a team manager or in some area in which you have expertise to benefit the club for 2008! Talk to a current committee person now. I am unable to continue with the junior convener role after Presentation Night and the end of the 2007 season, and Trish Hassell has agreed to take on a caretaker role until a new convener is elected at the club AGM. The future of this club and the progress of your daughters depends on families in our hockey community committing to the many volunteer tasks required to make a vibrant and successful club. There will be a meeting of all members interested in becoming part of the junior committee for 2008 on Thursday September 27th at 7pm at the clubrooms. Please let Trish Hassell or Rachel Aston know if you are interested but cannot attend. This is just an ‘expression of interest’ meeting and should run for approximately one hour only. KEY DATES

U13GA Season Report - Julia and Amy Coshan It was a big season for the U13GA’s this year, plenty of great hockey was played with a lot of laughs and fun times had by spectators, coaches and players alike. The U13GA team this season was composed of a majority of girls who had played together last year as well as a few new additions, the girls all joined together very well to become a cohesive and supportive team who always managed to have fun. A move from U13GP to U13GA this season caused some concern initially as our competition looked a lot bigger and stronger, however our girls showed their skills & determination, holding their own in all games this season and giving every team we played a good, tough game.
Throughout the season the improvement in the girls was obvious to all involved and something they deserve to be very proud of. Special mention must be made of Isabella, Montana, Karina, Emily and Lydia who all stepped in to play goalkeeper when our regular goalkeeper was injured. These girls took up a position that was not popular and all did a fantastic job! Thanks must also go to Toni Arnott (team manager), Trudy McGregor (first aider), Chris Mullan (umpire) and Di Saward (our emergency team manger/first aider), without whom this team would not have made it through the season!!Congratulations to all the girls who played in the U13GA team this season, we look forward to seeing you all playing for Australia in 10 yrs time! U15GA Season Report - Richard Moore The girls did a fantastic job this year, although we only won 3 games and drew 3 games, There were only 2 sides in the competition that we didn’t have a chance of winning against at least once. I am very proud of all the girls for their grit and determination and their never give up attitude especially in the latter half of the season when we struggled for numbers and had to borrow Monty ( in her first year at hockey) from the U13’s. We have had a lot of fun along the way, learnt a few more skills, how to play as a team and made lots of new friends. Most of the girls will still be U15 next year and with the experience of this season behind them……..things are looking very promising for next season. Thank you for a wonderful season…..Sarah, Georgia, Megan, Kirsty, Danielle, Rebecca, Sophia, Stephanie, Milli, Ashlee, Katie and Katherine.Thank you Vickie (Team Manager) & Steve (First Aid) and all the parents who have supported and encouraged the girls this season. I would also like to thank the committee for giving me the opportunity to coach such a great bunch of girls.I wish all the girls the best for the future, as I'm sure we might even see a few of them in "The Green & gold" one day. U15GN Season Report - Clare Dawson
This season can be summed up by the team’s terrific performance against the topside, Footscray, in the semi final. Essendon gave Footscray a real scare!
All the girls have developed their core skills and understand how to play as a structured and supportive team unit. U15N is a mix of new and experienced players who have all blended together to generate great team spirit. This has resulted in some great wins and spirited matches. Playing in defence was a challenge during the earlier rounds without a regular goalie. The talking and coordination between the backs was excellent. Everyone who played as a half had a very active season. Players learning the art of combining defence and attack, whilst running hard at the same time. The forward line became more and more cunning as the rounds progressed producing some excellent set plays and goals. The great results would not have been possible without the seemingly endless supply of performance enhancing lollies! A big thank you to Leonie.I am looking forward to next season when we can silence those “tigers!!” and maybe win a Grand Final! Apologies to the U17GN team—the team report will be posted with the newsletter on our website as soon as it is available.
U17GA Team report—Erica Trahar and Bronwyn Jones The ELHC under 17 A team had a pretty good year in 2007. At the start of the season, we added to the side from last year with several players moving up from the under 15 division and also from Brunswick Hockey Club. Throughout the season, the team was able to match it with all the other clubs and had some very exciting games; enjoyable wins, nerve-racking draws and narrow losses! Although an interrupted season for a number of reasons (year 10 formals, overseas holidays, skiing trips, several debilitating injuries and the possibility of ruining that streak-free fake tan) we were able to draw upon a number of new or different players to help us along the way and we thank them very much for their eagerness and passion on the field. The girls finished up 2nd overall at the conclusion of the home and away season, which was a fantastic effort and a testament to their consistency throughout the year. Despite bowing out of the competition in the first final, the whole group has been keen, committed and played some very impressive hockey, of which they should all be proud. We’d like to thank our manager; Michael McGeary for his enthusiasm and lollies; Don Trewin for his hockey brain and professionalism; and our tireless and dedicated supporters who braved the cold every week!
Another big thank you to all the girls who played with us this season: Amy, Bess, Chloe, Rach, Alex W, Alex H, Lara, Lou, Hilary, Sarah H, Katie K, Katie M, Hannah E, Hannah S, Sarah O, Georgia and Caitlin!
U17PA SEASON REPORT - Amy Goodwin The Under 17PA team started the season off this year with a few ‘bumps in the road’! However the girls continued to remain positive and enthusiastic about their hockey. Game three came around and the girls had yet to see a win. Their continual commitment to the team and wanting to improve meant that this game was the turning point beating Mornington Peninsula 2 – 1. From here on out the girls experienced a season of some fantastic highs and some unfortunate lows. Their commitment stayed strong and their enjoyment obvious. No such more than one very long trek to play a Friday night game in Ballarat. Where unfortunately the result didn’t go our way but the girls were full of excitement and laughter….. and MacDonald’s chicken nuggets!! When the last game of the season came around (and the last ever junior game for a lot of girls) emotions were high. Looking at a possibility of the game not going ahead I was confronted by a team of girls that were not willing to finish the season with out making the long drive over to Knox for a 7.15pm game, despite the traffic. All but three of the girls played that night to finish off the season in the right way!
Summer Skills and Running Programs This year ELHC will offer a 4 week skills program in November and 4 week running technique and fitness programs in February 2008. Each program is designed to enhance your playing capabilities by improving skills, running style and general fitness level.
The girls in the Essendon Under 17PA team showed commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season which made coaching them a positive and very enjoyable experience!! 1. The Skills Development program will cost only $20 and will be run by 2 excellent coaches—Hernie Isorena and Don Trewin. The program will run on Tuesday evenings from 7 - 8.30pm on the following dates: November 13, 20, 27, Dec 4. Contact Trish Hassell to enrol.2.
