Junior Girls News -Season 2008 (No.1 – 5 February) PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to 2008.  This year looks like being a great one for ELHC with new look Clubrooms and the upgrade to our No 2 ground.  We hope that you have been keeping fit over the summer and are as keen as we are to get the new year rolling.

This year’s program is nearly sorted and a copy of our calendar is attached.  Some dates are still to be confirmed.

With the retirement of Rachel Aston as Junior Convenor a void was created that will be hard to fill.  Rachel, as most of you will know from personal experience, was excellent in her leadership of the Junior Section of ELHC and will be sorely missed in the role.  Her service will be remembered with gratitude from us all.  Rachel has not left us completely as she has been guiding her replacement, Ross Erickson, through the intricacies of managing the Juniors and she will continue with us as a parent, player and supporter of the committee.

Pre-season Running

In order to help junior players prepare for the season we will be conducting a series of sessions focusing on running skills required for hockey, including sprinting (essential for rapid positioning and corner defence) and field mobility.  We are lucky to have Paul Bray running these sessions.  Paul is an experienced and certified athletics coach who has coached Little Athletics and junior developmental squads. The first session will be on Wednesday, 6 February commencing at 7:00pm.  Sessions will also be held on the following three Wednesdays (13, 20 and 27 February).  Each session will go for an hour.  There will be a once off cost of $20 which will cover all sessions. The sessions are open to all Juniors at the Club.  Please make sure you come suitably attired for running, including footwear suitable for the hockey fields.  Hockey sticks are essential as all runners will need to carry them as in a game.  Please also bring plenty of drinking water as the weather may be hot. These sessions are strongly recommended! Pre-enrolment is not essential, you can enrol at the first session.  If you do wish to register your name or if you have any questions please contact Ross Erickson on 0413 465 070 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Registration Night (Wednesday 13 February)

Registration Night will be on Wednesday 13 February commencing at the clubrooms from 5:00 pm until 7:30 pm.  A copy of the registration form is attached and it will be helpful if it can be filled out before the night.  If you can’t make it on the 13th you could email a filled out form to Ross Erickson on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and bring a signed copy to training after that.  Registration on the night will be most helpful as it will mean that we can complete our Hockey Victoria registration on time and give us a firm basis for planning the best year possible for the girls.  Registration on the night will also mean that we can give each member an information bag full of useful goodies. At the time of sending this newsletter the Club has not set the fees for 2008.  The fees should be set later this week and will be passed on to you well before Registration Night.

Training

Training will commence on the week of 18 February.  Until the old ground has been resurfaced we will have only the use of the Essendon 1 ground.  This will mean that for several weeks Wednesday nights will be a little squashed and we may need to bring forward at least one teams training to share with the U13s in the 5 to 6 slot on Wednesdays.  This will only be until the new ground is finished and we can spread out. We are also looking at a time slot on Monday nights for at least one of the teams.  A decision on this cannot be made until we have discussed this matter with the coaches (who are still to be confirmed).

Teams for 2008

Based on our knowledge of the likely numbers at this stage we have entered one U13 side, two U15 sides (15A and 15P) and two U17 sides (17GA and 17GP).  We still need new recruits for the U13 and U15 sides, so if you know of anyone in those age groups who may be interested please pass on our invitation to join and let them know what a good club we are.

Coaches and Support Positions

At the end of 2007 we had several expressions of interest in coaching at the club in 2008.  Ross will be in contact with all those that expressed interest in the next few days and formal appointments will be made shortly.  We are still interested in hearing from anyone else that is interested in coaching as the expressions of interest still leave us a little short of the numbers we require and we are always pleased to have assistant coaches at all levels.  If you are interested and believe that you are suitably qualified (or would like to become qualified) please telephone Ross on 9337 8169, 0412 465 070 or email on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Club Support Volunteers Sought

As ELHC is run completely on volunteer lines we are seeking motivated people to help run the Junior Section.  At this stage Ross, as Convenor, has been appointed by Club and is being assisted/guided/mentored by a small but experienced support group.  More help is needed and to be successful the following positions have been identified to be filled:
  • Umpire Coordinator
  • Fundraiser
  • Social Secretary
  • Canteen Coordinator
  • Team Manager/First-aid Coordinator
  • Registrar
  • Development Coordinator
  • Equipment Coordinator
  • Coaches Coordinator
Please don’t be shy or daunted by the titles.  In most cases the hardest part will be setting up, after which you will be surprised at how easy it will be and that it can be fun and satisfying helping your daughters and making new friends.

Remember that you don’t have to take on a task on your own, ask a friend to share the load and you will find that it will be great fun.

Please, please, please consider volunteering or helping in any small way you can. Ross can be contacted if you are considering volunteering, or would like to discuss how you might help, on 9337 8169, 0412 465 070 or email on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Looking forward to a happy and successful 2008,

Ross
